As a mother, you will always remember the first moments of your baby's life. It brings with it a bundle of emotions - anticipation, excitement, apprehension, fear, sheer pain followed by absolute, indescribable, insurmountable joy - as you give that one final push to bring the little blessing out into the world - being the mom.

For first time mothers who are rather inexperienced when it comes to child care, the months prior to giving birth are plagued with apprehensive thoughts - how the baby would look like, whether it be a girl or a boy, what is the right way to hold him, to feed him or bathe him. All these questions race through your head seemingly without a single answer.

Here are a few facts that would help you calm those nerves down:

Imagine a place that is safe, warm, and free of any pain or discomfort; where you do need to worry about having to eat, drink, or even breathe. Now, imagine being pushed out from that safe zone and pulled into a world of bright lights, strange smell and noise, where you have to fight for every breath and cry for the first time in your life. That is how your baby would feel during the first few seconds of his life and that is a very critical stage because it will determine if and how well your baby can survive outside the womb.

Latching on to the mother is another very crucial stage during the first moments of his life. As soon as an infant feels anything rub against his cheek, (in this case, it would be your nipple) he would instinctively open his mouth, latch on to it, and start sucking. Apart from the obvious bond that would form right then and there, suckling also helps keep your uterus contracted. This is necessary to prevent too much blood loss from the birthing process.

Because the infant must be monitored closely, he will be staying in the nursery for about a day. You, too, can use this time to give yourself some much needed rest from the physical and emotional strain that you just went through.

Rooming in usually takes place after 24 hours. This will be the time when you can hold your precious baby in your arms and wonder how God could have created such a perfect little blessing. Being a mom, giving birth is one of the most painful, yet equally rewarding and fulfilling experience a woman can ever have in her entire life. To be able to share the first moments of your baby's life is just priceless.
