These cameras would be around $200-400, offering you features like shockproof and waterproof capabilities. The highest line would be the Digital Single Lens Reflex (D-SLR) cameras. These are the types that professional photographers use. They come with automatic features like the compact models but offer a varied range of adjustments to suit every need and instance professionals may use. These cameras also allow various attachments like flashes and lenses to adapt to different needs. Basic models of these would cost from $400-$1000.

If you are totally new to photography or in using a camera, maybe the simplest one would best suit you. If you are happy enough to take good pictures with lesser frills, go for the basic models, which already give pretty good pictures. If you need it to upload pictures for sharing or if you plan to print pictures within a 5R (5 x 7 inch) size then the basic compact cameras will be more than enough for your needs.
