Dogs are excellent walking buddies; however, even such a simple task requires you to follow certain norms so here are eleven rules on walking your dog.

1. Consider taking dog classes.
The training would not be on walking, per se, but more on teaching your dog to heed to commands such as sit, down, or heel so in time, he can be trusted off leash.

2. Choose the right leash.

There are now several variations to the conventional leash - pinch collars (which are useful if your dog is a puller), harnesses, and even retractable leashes.

3. Show that you are in control.
Contrary to what we usually see, it should be you leading the walk, and not your dog. If your dog senses that you lack confidence, then he will be harder to control.

4. Do not allow your dog to pull on the leash.
If he does this, stand your ground and only resume walking when he stops tugging. Again, this is about maintaining control.

5. Maintain composure when your dog is distracted.
If something has caught your dog's attention, keep moving forward. Give the leash a tug to divert his attention back to your walk. If he is stubborn, you can use your foot (not to kick him, of course) to get his attention back.

6. Make walking alongside you an enjoyable experience.
Give him treats whenever he walks beside you. Your dog will easily make this association and would heed whenever you utter the command "close".

7. Check if dogs are allowed in the area you plan to walk him with.
Even parks and trails may have certain restrictions. So, make it a habit to always check ahead, especially if it is the first time you are taking your dog there.

8. Always carry a pooper scooper.
If you do not have the actual pooper scooper, there are always newspapers, plastic or zip lock bags - anything that you can use to scoop the dirt off the pavement.

9. Stay hydrated and allow time for rest.
Dogs cannot and do not sweat. The only way for them to cool down is to pant and drink lots of water so always bring some water with you.

10. Equip your dog with means for identification.

Whether it be dog tags, collars, or even tattoos, every dog should have a form of identification.

11. Have your dog checked regularly.
Dogs, too, may develop health conditions that have walking or running as a contraindication, so have you pooch checked regularly by his favorite vet.

Walking your dog does not have to be a chore. Make walking your dog a truly pleasurable experience with these eleven simple rules!
