Originally, RSS was created by Netscape. The company used it when competition was a bit stiff in the portal business. RSS .90, which was an XML format, was made to gather and add news on their site easier. After some time, RSS .91 came out; however, they abandoned it after they quit the portal business.

UserLand Software picked it up and kept developing it. So far, they have come up with RSS 1.0, which was based from the original idea. Recently, they also developed RSS. 2.0.

RSS can also be used on personal websites. However, instead of doing manual updates, softwares and tools like Weblog can be used by web managers. This automatically creates headlines, links, as well as descriptions.
